Welcome to my personal challenge, 30 in 30.
30 Designs in 30 Days
Each day I will upload a design of the day to social media. It may be a photograph, illustration, page layout or whatever else I come up with. I have jotted down a few ideas but haven’t created any designs. The design I come up with may just be something I put together that day or something I work on for several days. Either way, the goal is to upload a design every day for 30 consecutive days
Please follow me on Social Media and provide some feedback. I’m sure in the coming month I will need your support, encouragement and honest feedback.
Announcement.
So, shall we call this the first design or just the announcement? I don’t know. Honestly I think I’ll wait until the end of the month and then decide.
Peeve Bunny!
We all have pet peeves. Rather than a pet peeve being an annoying thing that happens around us, what if it was a pet in your home. I recently asked the social media community what their “Pet” peeve would look like. One response I received was, “Rabbit.” Ok, not much to go on so I went with my first thought. What would peeve a rabbit. That is how I came up with Peeve Bunny.
I think he came out kinda cute. Let me know your thoughts on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter or Google+
Encouragement Should be Freely Given
No one moves forward on negativity. This one’s a bit personal for me. At least 5 teachers told me any career in the arts was a waste of time. One going so far as to make the comment, “So, you must want to live in a gutter.” Even my family was discouraging. Whatever you enjoy doing there is a way to make a living doing that! So, QUIT discouraging others.
Sadie
My husband took this photo just after we adopted our sweet little Sadie Dog. Sweet in nature she looks downright menacing in this photograph. This was increased when the photo was posterized in Photoshop. I liked it so much I thought it could be even more dramatic as vector art. I like it. I hope you do as well.
Workforce Vend Graph
Venn graph made of text. Challenges of todays multi-generational workforce. For more information please go to Spokes Learning
Rail Trail
Out walking the dog I found the curve of this bench and the trail made for an interesting image. In Photoshop I added the trail name. Using embed and emboss along with Blend If sliders I embedded the text into the bench.
Mushroom Home
When I saw these mushrooms and the gnarled tree trunk I couldn’t help but think how they would make a wonderful home for a magical creature. Using a variety of techniques I compiled 8 images into this little mushroom house in the tree.
The Fall
30 Designs in 30 Days. Day 7.
Just started watching, The Fall, on Netflix. The way they do the lighting highlights Jillian’s features beautifully for drawing.
Concept Art
For inspiration I decided to do some concept art for a band that will be playing at the Belly Up Tavern in September, 2017. The Belly Up is a great place to gather for music and insperation.
Poster Concept Art
Concept poster design for the band, Too Many Zoos, playing at the Belly-Up Tavern
Inspirational Poster
Inspirational poster design.
Poster Concept Art
Concept art for a show at the Belly-Up Tavern
Monster in the tinder box
I had been seeing this monster in the tinder box next to the fire place for months. I finally decided to draw him. This gives you a glimpse of how my eyes see the world around me.
Tango Poster
Bergan Tango Marathon poster art design. My concept for a poster design for this festival in Bergen, Norway
Style
I loved the lines in this pose of a vintage model. The idea was to keep to only the lines necessary to convey the image. I love detail and find myself having to rein back the amount of detail I put into a design so this was a good exercise for me. This was done in Illustrator using a variety of stroke shapes
M.J. O’Neill
Well I’m half way through. Thought I’d upload something special. I’ve been working on this digital painting for a while and it’s finally ready to post. This is the first place we had supper in Dublin, Ireland. I thought the photo was a good candidate for a painting. The photo was used as a template for traditional painting techniques done in a digital medium. The original photo is not part of the final painting. All the detail is hand painted.
Supporting Zoos
I created all these wild animal brushes in Photoshop for another project. Short on time to post “Something” for Day 16 of this personal challenge I came up with this poster to highlight that zoos don’t just exhibit animals they are instrumental in conservation.
Day 17 and out of time!
Well, day 17 was a very busy day and it was suddenly 10pm and I had nothing to post! Racking my brain for an idea, any idea I could do in an hour or less. This is what I came up with. Maybe not great but it is at least creative.
Old time Taxi
Adobe Illustrator. Illustration of an old time taxi. I created this illustration for use in another project but just had to use it for my personal challenge as well.
Fly me to the moon
Composite of a golden eagle silhouette, an image of the moon and a pin-up girl mixed together to create this image. The Golden Eagle silhouette, moon image, background and text were done in Photoshop. The Pin-up girl was done in Illustrator then brought into the Photoshop document for the final composit.
Poppy Fields wine label
Well another day where life gets in the way of what I really want to be doing. Short on time I quickly drew this poppy then had to decide what to do with it. I used the Photoshop add-on, PSD Covers to place label and cap art on a wine bottle.
Eclipse 2017
Eclipse 2017 generated a great deal of excitement across the U.S. Ok, so it’s cliché but I just couldn’t help myself and do a short animation in celebration of this lunar event.
Pope in Repose
Every time I see this mountain near Los Lunas New Mexico, all I see is a Pope in repose. You have to be in the right stretch of the Monzano Highway to see it, but I now have my family convinced this mountain is, “The Pope in Repose.”
It’s alway hazy and hard to photograph. I took several images, mountain/foreground from one image, sky from another and a multitude of images of a Pope in repose to create a composite of what my mind visualizes every time I drive this stretch of highway.
Public Art
This is a piece of public art in downtown Solana Beach on Cedros Ave. It is placed in front of a parking lot with industrial buildings in the background. This made for a messy background for this great piece of art. Even with advanced masking techniques there was just not enough contrast to easily remove the background. This meant I had to get as much as possible then painstakingly refine the mask for Every Single Bird. It took about 4 hours of masking but I think the result was worth the effort.
Unusual Mushroom
Poor husband, he just saw an oddly shaped mushroom. I saw the creature it wanted to be. It was also delicious.
Web Banner
Animating takes a long time! It’s just a fact. It takes time. Especially when you change the story board at the last minute. I decided I really wanted white text on a blue background and wanted the Additive Art to not only animate in near the end but animated out in the beginning. Tip: Adding additional animation the the beginning of a project means re-timing every other element! Well I got it done and here is the final rendition.
Sentimental Card
The stargazer lilies were created using the gradient mesh tool in Illustrator. I added effects and textures to give the card a paper-stock feel. Using the Illustrator file in Photoshop I used the add-on PSDCovers to apply the design to a card.
Goodmorning Sunshine
I saw this sign and though the sun was just waking up and opening its eyes. The sign wants, what the sign wants so I animated this little sun just waking up and blinking its eyes. Animation created in Adobe After Effects and Media Encoder.
I Really liked the LABEL
I was sipping on a glass of this great Pinot Grigio when I though about how I had originally purchase it because I “Really” liked the label. That gave me the idea to do an add concept. I took a photo of a nearby tuscan style home and made a composite with photos I took of a full and, sadly, empty bottle of this wine.
Day 29
Next to last day and I was desperately trying to complete day 30 in time. Day 29 needed to be something I could do in 1-2 hours. I sat down with a blank layout, started with the large 29 and just kept going from there. Simple but I thing effective in the messaging.
Something special for DAY 30!
Concept, design and execution in 16 hr. or less. Life still went on so some days I had considerably less time. Yet, here we are, 30 designs done!
4 days ago my husband requested a design based on the Styx, The Grand Illusion album cover. A bit tight for a digital painting, wasn’t sure I could make it but I had my deadline. Worked on it a little every day and here you have it.
